Light Sails have been a staple of Science Fiction for decades, at least since the 1950s. But until recently, there hasn't been much actual development. Probably the main reason is that most of the missions and projects have not been amenable to using light sails. In 2010 Japan launched the first successful demonstration, the IKAROS spacecraft. Today the first privately funded light sail craft, having survived a few glitches, successfully deployed its sails. Light sails may be useful in several roles, such as long term exploration missions and possibly resource-return trips from far distant mining outposts. While the acceleration provided by light sails is tiny, it is continuous.
